In partnership with the Commonwealth Housing Trust (CHT) who undertook the construction, and with the support of the local community and the provincial government, we operate Kivuli Hostel – our flagship hostel.
Kivuli Hostel opened in late 2008 and provides overnight care for 32 of the more severely disabled children (16 boys and 16 girls) who would otherwise not be able to attend the Special Unit at the Gilgil Township Primary School. Many of these children have physical as well as mental disabilities making them especially vulnerable.
The existence of the hostel alone has increased the number of children in the Special Unit from 11 in 2006 to close to 70 today. These are children who were previously hidden away from wider society. As a result we are delighted that Kivuli Hostel has been recognised as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ by the Kenyan government.
We are now fundraising to build a second hostel on the same site, replicating this success and doubling the number of children and families who will benefit. We have a good understanding of how such facilities operate, through experience, and we know that simple, practical designs are the solution. With our links to local project managers and architects, supplemented by voluntary UK based construction professionals, we are in a strong position to build upon the success of Kivuli Hostel.
